Keep progress going after stroke rehabilitation stops

Constant Therapy | Stroke

The American Stroke Association has an ambitious goal: to end stroke! In the meantime, seven million people in the United States live with the disease’s effects. To promote rehabilitation, The Learning Corp and its Constant Therapy app are supporting the esteemed American Stroke Association to get the word out that stroke is beatable through increased access to mobile rehabilitative tools.

Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Thankfully, most now survive. Stroke death rates for 2016 were 17 percent—a 75 percent drop from 1968! Improvements in modifiable risk factors and in treatment immediately following stroke (such as administering alteplase to dissolve blood clots) are credited for the decline.

Despite progress in reducing stroke mortality, there remain millions of people recovering from a stroke at any given time. Rehabilitation may continue for months and years after the event, and recovery may be a long process for some. For such people, The Learning Corp’s Constant Therapy—a mobile app that provides speech, language, and cognitive exercises—can play an indispensable part in rehabilitation.

In fact, of the seven million people currently living with stroke, many are not aware of recovery options to use at home. In addition, many survivors live in locations where additional therapy may be geographically difficult to access.

Our goal: raise awareness that stroke is beatable

Now to reach even more survivors, we’re supporting the American Stroke Association’s message that stroke is beatable. Our support takes two forms:

  1. Help as many people as possible understand that they can get on-demand access to speech, language and cognitive exercises, at home or in the clinic, at any point in their rehabilitation.
  2. Through May 31, 2020, The Learning Corp, creators of Constant Therapy, will donate $2.50 per monthly subscription sold and $25.00 per yearly subscription sold to the ASA’s Together to End Stroke® initiative, with a minimum donation of $50,000.

The initiative, the first of its kind between The Learning Corp and the American Stroke Association, is designed to help the estimated 800,000 people in the United States who suffer a stroke each year to better understand the tools that can help them manage their long-term recovery.

Our founder and president, Veera Anantha, describes the initiative this way: Early and frequent therapy is a vital component to regaining function after a stroke, and research shows that Constant Therapy users practice on average four times more exercises compared to people who practice exclusively in a clinic. Our support of the American Stroke Association allows us to reach more patients, and work together to end stroke.”

Proud supporter of The American Stroke Association’s Together to End Stroke®

The preeminent organization based around building awareness of stroke, the American Stroke Association began in 1997 as a division of the American Heart Association. The American Stroke Association teams with millions of volunteers to fund innovative research, fight for stronger public health policies and provide lifesaving tools and information to prevent, treat and beat stroke.

One of the ASA’s initiatives is Together to End Stroke®, in which the Association works closely with healthcare professionals, survivors of stroke, caregivers, sponsors, supporters and caring individuals to provide the resources to help prevent, treat, and beat stroke. National sponsors are Bayer Aspirin, Kindred Hospital Rehabilitation Services, and Medtronic.

The Learning Corp is a proud Together to End Stroke supporter. Mitch Elkind, M.D., the volunteer chairman of the American Stroke Association, says The Learning Corp’s support will help patients.

“Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in America, but with proper education and treatment, including appropriate rehab, stroke patients can maximize their recovery,” Dr. Elkind says. “We are excited that TLC is an avid supporter of our Together to End Stroke initiative. TLC’s support will help patients manage their recovery and improve their quality of life.”
